Hi, I'm Bianca

And, yes, this page is all about me, but let's start with you.

I want to make sure you're in the right place.

Does this sound familiar?

You've come a long way in your Spanish learning journey...

βœ… Now, you want to continue learning for the joy of it.

βœ… You've tried apps and traditional courses and feel you've moved beyond that phase.

βœ… You know learning a language is a lifelong journey, so you want it to feel like me time β€”fun, relevant, and fulfilling.

βœ… You value the consistency that comes from enjoying the process rather than just pushing through for the sake of it.

βœ… You like to dive deep into the topics you explore and your reflections, so you want a safe space for these experiences.

Does that sound like you?

Seeking some support?

That's where I come in!

I'm here to help you transform your Spanish learning into a creative pursuit and a space for personal exploration so you naturally build consistency and continue refining your language skills while enjoying the process.

Let me explain a little further how I can help you do that. Sure, I could just tell you I've got the academic cred (yes, I'm that slightly nerdy girl who graduated with honors and reads research papers for fun). But it's my personal experiences and teaching background that truly shape my approach.

So, let me share some key moments from my journey and the lessons I've learned.

Lesson 1: Communication over perfection

My story with languages began in Venezuela, my home country, when I started learning English at school. To be honest, it wasn't a smooth ride. I struggled with tricky words like "at," "in," and "on" that didn’t translate well β€”in Spanish, they were all "en". I could manage decent grades on tests, but I couldn't really understand or speak the language.

Around age 12, I had a happy accident. I messed with my TV settings and suddenly had English captions on my favorite shows. Just like that, I was exposed to English beyond the classroom. Over time, I started understanding what they were saying. However, my conversational confidence was a different story.

Even more than 15 years later, when I moved to the US, my fear of speaking English was palpable. I vividly remember not daring to order food at restaurants. Picture this: I understood the menu perfectly well but was too anxious to speak the language. So, I'd ask my bilingual friends to convey my order to the waiter, who needed to ask me 5 more questions before rushing to the next table. It was exhausting for everyone.

Then it hit me– much like my only concern when watching TV was making sense of my favorite shows, the waiters just wanted to take my order. They couldn't care less about my prepositions. Lesson learned: communication is all about... well, communicating.

Lesson 2: Understand the principles, craft the approach

I could chat for hours about my linguistic insights as a Spanish-speaking immigrant in the US. However, the turning point was when I volunteered to teach a Spanish class. Boy, this proved to be far more challenging than I anticipated. Being a native speaker didn’t automatically make me an effective instructor.

But you know what? I immediately felt in love with teaching.

After just one semester, I went all in and pursued a master's degree in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. I loved the whole experience, particularly those classes that dived into how our brains take in a new language.

My thesis? The effects of captioned TV on incidental learning. I was still intrigued by that childhood mishap with my TV and why certain experiences outside the formal setting can be so effective.

To this day, understanding how people learn languages is one of my biggest passions. And in my teaching, I focus on creating the right conditions for language development to take place. By understanding these principles, we can then play with the approach and adapt it to fit your unique needs and preferences.

Lesson 3: Beyond goals - The fuel for language learning

Over the past seven years, my students have ranged from as young as 3 to well into their 70s and beyond. I've taught in a Montessori school, run an after-school immersion program, guided retirees at a lifelong learning institute, among other experiences. Understanding how languages are learned has been the anchor in adapting my teaching style for each unique context.

And here's something else I've found in every group: enjoyment of the process fuels engagement and consistency. The role that motivation plays is particularly evident with children, but this holds true for adults as well. Having a clear end goal is merely the beginning.

I faced this very challenge when I decided to tackle French. After enduring one level following a traditional approach, I was left thinking that investing hours on grammar rules wasn't the most effective use of my time (it's not how our brains work) and I was, well, rather bored. So, I reverted to the fundamental principles, used myself as guinea pig for what works and what doesn’t, and made sure I had fun along the way. Soon, my ability to engage in real discussions improved, allowing me to make new French friends, explore new hobbies in this language, and much more.

Because motivation isn't just the engine of consistency; it's the key to deep and meaningful learning. That's why, in our 1-1s, we work together to craft an approach that you genuinely want to stick with, making sure that it’s effective, and nurturing your connection with the language.

Bianca is absolutely excellent to work with! I have a M.A. in Linguistics, have dabbled in language acquisition, and have taught language classes myself. She is brilliant in creating curriculum for each student/class, individually! (Practically unheard of these days!) She differentiates dialectal differences and places an emphasis on culture. The classes are refreshing, fun, engaging, informative and at the pace that you need.

Because learning was based on experience and not blind repetition, I was able to retain my Spanish knowledge for years after our lessons. I would advise anyone to definitely go for it, as it was a fun but also beneficial experience.

PS. I would love it if you could learn some German so that you can teach me that too!!!

I enrolled in Bianca's Spanish class at the University of Georgia Osher Lifelong Learning Program. She was a fabulous instructor, making everyone in the class comfortable, instilling confidence in all of us. (...) When the class ended, two of us decided to take private lessons together with Bianca- I look forward to every class. Each class is stimulating, enlightening and also fun.

I really enjoyed learning Spanish with Bianca. My program with her lasted two months, and I grew more and more comfortable with speaking in Spanish because of her. She is incredibly organized and keeps the class experience fun and engaging. I would recommend Bianca to anyone who wishes to improve their Spanish speaking skills.
